A 3×3 basketball tournament organised by the Takapuna North Community Trust in Milford last weekend easily drew its maximum of 24 teams of primary and intermediate school players.

The popular free tournament, held on Sunday at Carmel College’s gymnasium, attracted players in school colours and others entered in friend groups. Boys and mixed teams predominated, though one all-girls team also took part.

The trust, which runs a range of community activities, has lost its council funding from the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board, which is establishing a community coordinator role, based in Sunnynook, in its place. But the tournament was able to go ahead after the board allocated $15,000 to run activities the trust already had scheduled.

Trust chair Jill Schroder said options for continuing operations without future board funding were being explored.
